Absolutely not! If you look at most dressage riders, they are likely wearing spurs, and they are very careful about the calmness and well-being of their horses--it is part of the discipline. It is just an additional aid. As with any control device in equestrian, the degree of cruelty is entirely in the hand that wields it. You can make a horse's mouth bloody with a simple snaffle bit if you are hard with your hands. THe key to these tools is having enough control that you apply them only when you choose to, and not accidentally because you didn't have enough leg muscle to keep your spur off of your horse.

It depends on how you use them. You should never use them by force, but by a way to get a lazy horse to do more excersize.

They are not always inhumane. It all depends in how you use them!!!!
