well carbon is an element with 6 protons and electrons and carbon dioxide is 1 atom of carbon and two atoms of oxygen

Carbon is an element on the periodic table.
Carbon dioxide is a molecule made up of 1 Carbon atom bonded to 2 Oxygen atoms. It has the formula CO2.
The molecule looks like this O=C=O with double bonds between the carbon and oxygen atoms.

Carbon is an element. It is carbon bonded with other carbon atoms. Carbon dioxide is a combination of 1 Carbon atom and 2 Oxygen atoms (di- is the latin prefix meaning 2) . So it's just another chemical compund.

carbon is a pure element on the periodic table. it cant be broken down into anything else. just...carbon.
carbon dioxide is an elemental compound. that means that its more than one element (carbon and oxygen) chemically bonded together. it can be broken down.
carbon is also usually found in a solid state, while carbon dioxide is usually a gas.

carbon is a non metal and when it combines with excess air it forms CO2 that is carbon dioxide ..and when carbon burns in limitted supply of air it forms...carbon monoxide CO....both are harmful,but CO can even cause death when inhaled for even a small duration.
