I don't listen to much classical music and I want to get into it, starting with the most acclaimed, well-known pieces and working my way into the more obscure. What are the best Beethoven, Mozart, Back, Chopin, Mendelson, etc. pieces with which to begin?

Beethoven - any symphony, the Moonlight Sonata
Mozart - Symphony No. 51 (the "Jupiter")
Mendelssohn - the Hebrides Overture

I would also suggest some piano pieces by Debussy (Clair de Lune, La Mer or Images especially) and a Rachmaninoff piano concerto (any).

Once you get to obscure, check out some Scriabin piano pieces...far out stuff.

One of my favorites is Puccini's Turandot. The specific song is Nussum Dorma.

Also there is Beethoven's 5th.

Marriage of Figaro by Mozart.

Also the magic flute by Mozart.

I love Masses. So if you look for any of the Mass pieces they are beautiful!
