You're right....the show's success is by far and large NOT about simply picking good singers.
Here are just a few kinds of people who watch it and/or are on it
1) People looking for a good laugh who want to watch bad singers
2) People looking about something to gossip to with their friends
3) People who don't care about the singers at all but thing it's fun to see how the judges respond
4) People who want to know what the next big thing is far as artists before anyone else...regardless of whether the artists are good or bad
5) People who get on the show want to make a statement, regardless of if it has anything to do with good singing or not
6) People with odd sexual tendencies (like teenage girls who think Simon is hot b/c of his accent, being a wise ---, and such)
AND, FINALLY....
7) People who actually are good enough and determined enough to be hit singers and/or fans of them.
Note a high percentage of people who watch the show, in fact, are NOT mainly interested in good music.

So, I agree, the show is mostly about gossip, not about good singing itself...and, sadly, the reason it is popular does not have much to do at all with music.
I think the show should split in two shows, one more competitive version and one comic one....and some of the best singers from the comic one should be able to move on to the competitive one.
Good point you have with your question, by the way.

I think it's stupid either way. It was funny to watch the bad singers when the show first came out but it's gotten so old, and I'm sick of Simon and hearing about the whole thing.

Well, judging from what they've been airing lately they only have enough talented singers to fill up a thirty second block so they wouldn't even HAVE a show with out the losers, let alone be a hit.

Yes, because the whole show is not based on people who can not sing. It is only the first few weeks that they show really bad singers, and yes it is to get ratings but you gotta make that money. I feel as though people like to see other people embarrising themselves and I also think that people like to actually here good singing. Music makes the world go around.

I surely have some acquaintances that imagine that they are tremendous singers and they could surely win American Idol. regrettably they are incorrect. I surely have not in any respect informed them that they sounded undesirable because i did not prefer to damage their emotions yet persons have informed them that they could't sing. inspite of being informed that they couldn't sing to shop their existence, they nevertheless trust that they are tremendous singers! If Simon were to damage their emotions then they could haven't any man or woman responsible yet their selves.

No, but I would like to see more of the talented ones. It seemed like they had even more bad auditions than previous years.
