what is a good way to dry a rat that refuses to be still long enough to even be wrapped in a towel? he's not nipping or anything but i'm afraid he'll get sick if i leave him even the slightest bit damp.

Use a nice warm towel.

You can also see how he is with a hair dryer. If he is ok keep it extremely low and on the coolest setting.

Microwave a towel until it is nice and toasty. Rub him dry the best you can. He's not going to get sick if he is still damp unless he is in an area that has a cold draft. He will finish cleaning himself.

Your boy should have a (male) friend to keep him company, and most of the time they will keep each other clean. Pet rats really shouldn't be bathed unless they get something on them that is dangerous.

You can just put a warm towel in his cage and he will dry himself off as he snuggles in it.

What I do when I bath my rats is I fill the cage with cloth bedding warmed in the dryer. The rats dig under the bedding, stay warm, and at the same time the bedding dries them off. Just make sure the room temp is not chilly. When they are dry I remove the damp bedding and make up their regular cage.

No fighting involved, just a clean, happy rat.

I use to have a ferret. Fluffster used to get crazy after baths until I introduced the banana treat. I slowly conditoned him to think towel=banana treat. lol hope it works for you!
