I have turned off automatic updates, but each time I connect, the modem downloads at least 4 megs of unidentified stuff, completely clogging up the connection. Then, the modem stops communicating and I have to either reboot , or reinstall the driver to make it work. any ideas? thanks!

When you say Automatic updates I think you mean Windows update? Do you have an Anti-Virus application installed? If you do, and have it turned on, it is probably downloading updates in the background. If you don't have an anti-virus application, or it is turned off, then chances are you are downloading viruses.

May be 3 reasons. 1. Your auto update option is de-activated.... activate it 2. No new updates are there to download 3. Your windows is not genuine

If you are not sure what is doing the downloading, you might want to run some spyware remover, and update your virus definitions. Sounds like you may have a bug.

Perhaps you have a virus... or another program that runs in the background which has been set to download things at the startup.
