Just bought 2 Giant Danios and 2 Tiger Barbs. The Tiger barbs keep chasing the Danios and I don't really know what to do. Will the Danio be ok with the Barb in there or is there something I should do?

a lot of it will depend on the size of your tank. Like the first guy said, there is a pecking order to tiger barbs and they tend to be less nippy in larger schools. However, allow for about three gallons of water per tiger barb.

I love giant danios and had a school of six in my 55 semi-aggresive tank for quite some time. I personally could tell you horror stories about paradise gouramis (we named one the monster fish) but my danios got along great with them, the raphael, the silver dollars, and the clown loaches. They are indeed compatable with barbs as long as the tank is large enough and the schools are large enough. Most schooling fish do not actaully follow typical schooling behaviors until they are in groups of about six or more.

Once you tiger barbs are under control, you will see that they tend to stick to the middle of the tank whereas the Danios are almost exclusivlely top dwellers. They are quick and have size on their side, so they will be able to avoid the barbs when they need to. Many fights in tanks are over territory, and the two types of fish stay out if eachothers way. I would definatly increase the size of the danio school as well if you have the room. Allow for about 4-5 gallons per danio. This fish also does better in a longer tank as they like to swim back and forth. If they can't do this, it can lead to neuroic behavior such as swimming up and down the tank in the corners and lapping the tank non-stop.

I hope that helps! You've got some good fish there!

Tiger barbs are not highly aggressive fish, but do require a school to function well. I would suggest you add at least 3 more tiger barb as soon as possible. They really will stop chasing the danio so much and chase each other instead. The danio should be fine for a day or two as they are generally quick enough to avoid the barbs.

Best of luck! MM

Tiger barbs and Danios do not get along. Tiger barbs are a hostile fish and do not tolerate any other fish other then fish in the barb family. Danios are more of a community fish thus they are more doscile than barbs.. If you want the danios to live separate them from the Tiger barbs.. they do not get along.

thats normal, tiger barbs have a strict social order in thier schools, the dominant fish pick and nudge to keep the submissive ones in order and get them swimming in the right direcction. danios in general dont have much order to thier schools , they are just swimmers, i suggest you get more tiger barbs (have at least 5 in the tank) so they can fill the rest of the social places in thier school with fish that understand the rules of being tiger barbs, otherwise the danios will not understand why the barbs are whacking at them, and get wounded and possibly die

Barbs are extremely aggressive. I would make sure your danios have plenty of hiding places and plants to get away from the barbs. Also buy some more danios to make a bigger group.
