On June, 2006 I have rented an apartment in USA.Because of my insufficient English, I didn't know that the lease was 12 months.I thought it was month-to-month.I paid for June and I also paid security deposit. On July, 2006 there has been an emergeny in my country so I had to turn back to my country but I didn't let my landlord know that I was leaving because I was planning to come back again.Unfournately I didn't get a chance to come back again to the USA after I left.Yesterday a lawyer called me from USA and told me that I owe them 3075$.
Now, is it possible to reduce this amount?
What is the worst thing that will happen if I don't pay this amount?
What if I can't afford to pay?
Is there a risk of going to jail?
Thanks in advance.

I was in Virginia and I didn't make even the slightest damage.
I guess all my fault is that I didn't let them know about I was leaving but anyway I think paying $3075 is unacceptable while the rent per month is $580.

You could probably talk to your landlord and ask for a less on the payment.. or get a lawyer and defend your reason for not bridging the contract.. most likely, its impossible that you will get imprisoned because of it, but will have bad credit history in the US when you plan on getting back in the future... =)

Rental laws vary state to state, where was it exactly that you were renting?

where im from if you violate your lease agreement you forfeit your security deposit and are only liable for more money if you have physically damaged the property.
