sometimes its best to give up some so as to be able to properly take care of the rest and give them plenty of attention if you get to many it is hard to manage them all and you can only spread yourself so thin befor somthing suffers

1. They realize that the pet costs more than they expected. With food, vet bills, ect...
2. They realize they need to take even more care of their pets then they originally thought.
Before I was born, my sister and parents lived in an apartment and had about 5 parakeets. My parents said they started to get a big hassle. At the time they were really short on money, and a moving neighbor gave the birds to them. They took care of them for a while until my parents realized my mom was pregnant with me. They needed more money, and they also needed to move becase there wasn't a room for me in the apartment. The birds were pooping a lot, making a lot of noise (not helping my dads sleeping issues), and costing a lot, so my parents gave them away to another neighbor.
I would never dream of giving up our little puppy now, he is the best thing that has happened to us.
3. Sometimes people just get bored with their pets. When they realize their dog can't do backflips on command, they get angry and send them off.
Have you seen that pedigree commercial with the doggies in the pound :( So sad.

The ONLY thing that comes to mind for me,
would be because I found a PERFECT home for one of the six cats that I have taken in.
I feel a bit overwhelmed at times, but I would NEVER take one to the animal shelter. It would be to a person that I knew would take care and love it as much as I do.
Added:
I agree with Michelle about the aggression part too..(that is EXTREME aggression)
In that case, I would have it put to sleep. Not take it to a shelter.

My husband and I have 2 Siberian Huskies. One we got as a stray, and when no one claimed her, we decided to keep her. We adopted our other husky from our local animal shelter. There is absolutely nothing that would make us give them up! I have allergies, but I just suffer through it because I refuse to get rid of my dogs. Also, according to my rental agreement, I'm not supposed to have pets, but my landlord knows I have dogs, and he doesn't make an issue of it as long as my dogs don't cause problems, excessive barking, chewing things up, etc. If it did become a problem with my landlord, I would make arrangements to move and take my dogs with me.

The only thing that would ever make me give up a pet is if they were suffering; I would then do the humane thing and have them put to sleep.

The only thing for me would be upon my death and not knowing they were gone. I moved before due to my landlord saying pets must go. No way I told him I would then in return have to move and I did.

i guess if i got a pet, and it just didn't fit in with the ones i already have, i would get rid of it. or if it was just a lousy pet, like the cat i had that never came out from under the bed except to eat and hiss at me. he didn't last long. or if the pet became too ill or old to enjoy its life. then i'd euthanize it.

I could never give up my two dogs and I don't see what would make a person do such a thing unless it was either too much care for them or itwasn't what they were exactly looking for in that case they should have never gotten it.
