It's the OTHER girls that make that girl popular, she doesn't decide for herself -- If a new girl (I'm calling her Lisa) enters the school and she is funny, kind and just overall likable then she will get lots of friends. Then she will become friends with her friend's friends, and her popularity will grow and so does her confidence. This is a little known fact about human behavior: when someone likes you they will copy you. You can try it out - if your in a good convo with someone and just make a little movement like scratch your nose they will also touch their nose (but only if they like you!). And if the Lisa can attract boys as well as friends then the other girls will copy her even more. Lisa doesn't have to be pretty, she just has to have the confidence to make everyone else believe she's pretty. One of the prettiest girls in my school is a total dork so no-one is willing to accept that she is pretty. But when you get to the top you have to come down, because no-one will let you stay at the top for too long. It's a bit like the book "Twilight" - the more fans it gets, the more anti-fans it gets as well, y'know? Anyway, the new girl soon realizes she's popular, and thus her confidence level (socially) is through the roof. Lots of things happen at this stage; maybe Lisa gets arrogant and thinks she can push people around or be a *****. Maybe one of her friends feels neglected and thus starts to dislike her and turns other people against her. Maybe the other girls start to get jealous and then dislike her. Lots of stuff can happen to crash down her popularity again. Hopefully, if it wasn't her fault then she wont crash down too far. This can go from weeks to months to even years. I have never been THE popular girl at school, but I have been in the "elite" popular gang(s). But time goes on and different things happen to change us as a person. For me, my popularity crashed when my friend (who was basically the one that gave me the VIP ticket into the cool group) moved away, I feel out with my bf, who was Mr. popular, and then my "ex-best friend" came back to haunt me etc. But the big factor was when my dad died and i became severely depressed: So i went from a popular girl to a hermit in less that two years. My point is, no-one stays at the top forever because people are always changing. Hope i helped :]
