I currently have a job that is prestigious, pays the bills and is what I would consider very stable. However, I don't enjoy what I do. I want to pursue a career in a different field but am worried about the risks if it doesn't work out. Anyone have any insight on this?

Follow your dreams. Dont you want to look back and realize you have had a long happy life than to look back and realize that you had alot of things....that dont necessarily bring happiness? I majored in psychology in college because I thought it was so fascinating, though I could have majored in engineering or nursing and be guaranteed a job (SNOOOOOZEEEE!!). And now I have the opportunity to really follow my dreams, and be a stay at home mom. Cant think of a "job" that I would enjoy more, but it sure doesnt bring in much money (zero), even though I save alot of money not having to pay expenses that I would have if I worked. Best to you!

Although it is a scary thing, it is important that, unless it is at the expense of our children, we take some big risks in life at times. "Risks", can be another name for the paths in which we go on in life. We may be on a path and it hits a dead end and so we need to backtrack and while we are backtracking we see a path to the side of us and all we need to do is jump over and land onto it and it will lead us into another direction in life that may or may not put us in a better place. Hummmm....do we stay on the path we are at and continue going backwards toward where we started and find a new path or do we take a risk and see what happends on this new path?

It has been my experience when i take the "path of risk" that even if it isn't that correct path i picked up something from it and it still led me forward other than backward and onto another path in a positive direction. Eventually when you hit a path by taking a risk or not you will reach a point when you realize it was the correct one.

I gave up a job as a programmer in the City. No regrets whatsoever. Whilst I still make a living from IT, I do less of it and work on projects of my own choosing and which interest me.

Do "more of what works for you, less of what doesn't". Why don't you cut back on your hours or go part-time in your current job and explore the different field? That way, it's not "all-or-nothing". (Personally, I have no issue with jacking in something that I didn't like - as one door closes, another opens, I find).

I think what makes you happy is more important than the money. (Generally people want a lot of money because they think it will make them happy). And there's a nice bonus: people who love what they do generally do it very well indeed - to the point that they're paid more for it than their previous job.

i did this...i was quite stable, and it meant nothing. it has been an odyssey ever since. if you dont have family and friends that support you, they are going to think you are a bit crazy. personally, i would encourage you to follow the very thing that makes you feel a sense of purpose in life and that allows you personal growth. however, if the dream you follow is too different from where you are now, it may compromise your ability to go back to where you were before, even if you need to. it can be a fearful experience.

Do what makes you feel comfortable. To me I will follow my dreams than just slaving my way through something I really don't like and still get paid well. To feel good you must have a great job and environment that makes you feel great, and that pays you very well. Follow your dreams and you will achive and recieve better things.

That is why they call it work and not play.

You never know until you try.
It could be better, it could be worse.

Neither... most important is your happiness. your job's not making you happy then maybe following your dream will. some people could care less about where they work, they just want the money...others care less about how much they make, more about what they are doing...so you need to choose. what makes you happy and go for it.

Tough it out for awhile.Having a prestigious, stable position for a couple years on your resume' will lower your risks when you change careers later.Thats the"I got kid's or a mortgage"answer. If you are only responsible for yourself,go for it."No risk,no reward"Someone once said" My only regrets are the things I didn't do"...
