I would recommend splurging for the Mac. Mac's don't depreciate as quickly as PCs, and OS X will be much stabler than Vista. I have a MacBook at home, and it runs beautifully (unlike my PC at work on XP Pro...). My Mac can keep up with me no problem, yet my PC struggles to open new applications and toggle between windows, especially if I'm running a remote desktop session. I could be alot more productive at work if the software I use was available for OS X.

You can get new referbished computers that could not be sold because of "scratch and dents" and anything like that and you get to look through then and choose one with whatever program you like on it. My family and i just purchaced a new Dell with Windows XP Media Center, which is amazing. There is only a little tiny scratch on the case but the computer works perfectly and is virtually brand new. These computers are cheap and a great deal.

Wehn you buy the pc ensure that you quote you do not want Vista Installed.
Or you can buy Vista and Install a clean update of XP opperating system.
Online this may be more tricky but there still must be a mthod to choice with operating system you want.

Contact a small shop and they will custom build you a machine. I agree, I hate all this "pre installed crap" that you will never use anyway. What happened with the consumer having a choice? Oh yeah, Microsoft came along.
Ugh.

If computers with XP are all gone locally, then get one online or have one built for you and tell them which OS you want.
I share your concerns about Vista.

Go with a free Linux distros. There are several great 64bit distros too.
ubuntu is a good one. You can get a 64bit version (-amd64).
