All nuclear bombs are designed to explode while still well up in the air. They do more damage that way. In fact, a typical defense against a nuclear weapon is to blow it up before it detonates - they're too fragile to work when exploded from outside or probably after being dropped on something.

'Little Boy' was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. It exploded at a height of 580 meters. Approximately 70,000 people were immediately killed by the blast, and many, many more died later from the radiation exposure.

'Fat Man' was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. It detonated at a height of 550 meters. Though the bomb had a yield approximately 50% greater than its predecessor, it was only immediately responsible for the death of 40,000 civilians.

I suspect it would be hard to videotape a replica of something like that casually. Perhaps the best you could do would be to make comparisons and film those with a voice-over. It would be hard to find something 550 meters tall... the Empire State Building is only 443 meters. There are, however, other things you can compare. Little Boy used 0.6 kg of uranium, and produced the explosive force of about 15 kilotons of TNT. The blast radius was about a mile. It shouldn't be hard to find reference points of that nature...

They exploded in the air, just high enough to kill everyone on the ground with their blast wave.

For school?

Try getting all your friends to lay on the ground playing dead whilst you walk around them with your arms out, laughing.

That about sums it up.

Good luck.

I'm not sure. But according to Einsteins e=mc2, the energy created in the blast is the equivalent to the ammount of energy you get from turing a pen(or is it pen cap?) into energy.
