This is called collecting like terms". A term is nothing more than something that is added or subtracted. When you collect like terms, the first thing that you want to look at are the variables.

To add terms together, the variables HAVE to identical. The coefficients (the actual number written in front of them) can be different, but the variables have to match.

If a variable does not have a number written in front of it, as in your case, then there is what we call an "understood one" multiplying the variable. The one doesn't get written because any number times 1 is itself. But you can write it in if it helps you.

L + w + L + w = 1L + 1w +1L +1w

To "collect like terms" simply add or subtract the numbers in front of the variables.

1L + 1w +1L +1w = 2L +2w
