(1) Get you self a good antivirus or a free one .
(2) If you have not already scanned your comp with spybot do that now .Update it and then run it so it gets rid of all the spyware and trojans
(3a) Do an online virus scan to check if you still have any other viruses in your computer. And let us know if the online virus scan still finds any virus or spyware .

When your computer is free of viruses and spyware
(1a) Install and use firefox while browsing
(1b) Install a good firewall

You may try the OPERA browser...it has a built in pop-up stopper but you may still get those in page text ones. wild wild west...when not at your computer...turn it off..do not download attachments or open mail that is not from someone you know..be carefull downloading executables..you may try bazooka scanner..it is a freeware..choose well known sites..avoid p2p, torrent and java..keep it simple..keep it clean..reinstall regularly like the rest of the windows users. checkout the 46 best ever freeware utilities site and the portable freeware collection. I am not suggesting these are best sites just happen to have downloaded from there and had no issues.

The best defence? Preventing them.
Using Firefox to surf the net. It's more secure, faster, safer, more customizable, will copy over your cookies and favourites... and blocks pop-ups - http://getfirefox.com/

The way to get rid of viruses? Anti-virus programs.
AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free
Clamwin - http://www.clamwin.com/

If you have a virus, you probably also have spyware
Spybot Search & Destroy - http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html
Ad-aware - http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html

You probably don't have a firewall either (it keeps hackers out, and lets you know when programs are trying to get out)
Zonealarm - http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

These programs should help, and they're all free.

Frankly, an intelligent and informed computer user. Viruses/Trojans cannot touch you unless you run a program and it install it yourself.
