To the person that said the 1974 Steelers; as a Steelers fan you should know their best team was the 1978 Steelers. The 1974 Steelers barely squeaked by The Vikings (16-6) even though the defense only gave up 17 yards rushing. Swann and Stallworth didn't even start in 1974 and Bradshaw didn't start until the 8th week of the season. Come on, you should know your stuff.

The 1968 Jets? LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL! Come on, the were the best team on January 12, 1969 but if you play that game another 4 times, The Colts win every time. Give Earl Morrall the MVP for The Jets, throwing 3INT's inside The Jets 20.
I'm a HUGE Giants fan but to say the 1986 Giants or the 1990 Giants still is a stretch. The 1986 Giants were better than the 1990 version because their defense was much younger and more dominant.

Now to answer your question. I detest those 80's 49er teams but that 1989 49er's could be the most dominant team EVER! They destroyed The Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV 55-10. Montana threw 5TD's in just over 2 quarters Rice and John Taylor were the best WR's in the game, Roger Craig was one of the best RB's, Tom Rathman was a pro bowl FB and TE Brent Jones was one of the best at that position. On Defense the niners had the likes of guys like Ronnie Lott, Charles Haley and Bill Romonowski.
The 1978 Steelers were also an amazing squad. There has never been a better defensive line in the NFL. "Mean" Joe Greene, Ernie Holmes, L.C. Greenwood and Dwight White dominated like no other defense in history, LB's Jack Lambert and Jack Ham were also the best LB's in football, CB Mel Blount was easily the best of his time and Safeties Glen Edwards and Mike Wagner were some of the best in the league. In 1978 there wasn't a better WR tandem in football than Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. RB Franco Harris was still at the top of his game and Rocky Bleier was a nice change of pace.

If there was ever a way for the 1978 Steelers (who had 8 HOF's on that team) and the 1989 49ers to play a game I'd be the first in line to watch it.

Although it's close I'd give the nod to the 1978 Steelers because I still believe defense wins championships.

On a side note the 1985 Bears had one of the most dominant defenses in history but their offense was inconsistant. Walter Payton was nearing the end of his brilliant career and QB Jim McMahon was a risk taker and an erratic passer at best. A good defnse would swallow that 1985 Bears offense up. The 1978 Steelers had a better QB and much better WR's than the 1985 Bears

You can never go wrong with the 1968 Jets, or the 1986 and 1990 Giants.

the 1972 Dolphins. No argument. Why? They did not lose a single game. I dont see how anyone can argue the 85 Bears over the Phins. They lost a game. now they were good but they lost a game.

As much as I hate to say this, the 80's 49ers teams were absolutely dominant.
