The reason for this is because my parent are paranoid about using it. They assume that just because it smells strong, then it must be highly concentrated, and therefore be horribly bad for you.

Of course they are. They are artificial, chemically created, pollutants of indoor air. They do not clean dirty air, they merely cover up one smell with another.
As a general rule, if you can't eat it, drink it or rub it directly on your skin without some type of harm or ill side effect, then you probably don't want to inhale the vapours from it either. It's just not natural. If you want to freshen the rooms air, then simply clean up, and open a window from time to time. If you are just determined to purchase something to "clean" the rooms air, buy an air ionizer (ionic breeze) or have a permanent UV unit installed on your homes central air duct syatem for about $500. But if you are a smoker, then my entire answer is useless, your sense of smell may already be corrupted. Stop now while you can still breathe. Seriously...

No, they are not bad for you just bad on your pocket. The oil can burn pretty quickly and thus your replacing it and if you add up the cost at the end of the year its nuts. If you want your house to smell good use the Glade Scented oil candles or just about any Glade candle will work too. Little tip, if you buy the Glade Cinnamon or Vanilla gel inserts pull the back off and put in your dresser drawers. This will make your clothes smell really good and you don't have to wear purfume becuase you already have the scent on your clothes!

I can't believe that they would be hazardous, although I'm not particularly crazy about sprays and plug ins that have irritant warning statements on them. I have the perfect solution. It is a fragrance free product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a littler purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays, plug in's and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. I use this product everywhere including car, storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying.

having allergies I would say stay away from all of the plug ins and sprays. one could have moderate to severe reactions. Unfortunately I do. It's too bad we on a whole have to cover up odors instead of cleaning them up.
Try Vinegar for instance. there's also baking soda.Very safe products. Or just use plain soap & water , easy on the pocket book and safer for the lungs and body. It will be interesting to see 20 years from now the results of using all these fake and chemical laced fresheners.

I don't know if they are significantly hazardous, but I don't use them. I also don't burn scented candles or anything like that because my son has allergies and they seem to cause a reaction. So, I figure they can't really be good for you.

They can be harmfull to people with respiratory issues and also to infants. Breathing in the vapors is not recommended. Glade wont tell you that because it would hurt sales.

I don't use them because they bother my asthma and sinuses.
Don't think they are a hazard for the general public.
