I was wondering if anyone read the book "the histories" by Herodotus and if they know how my essay question reflects the book.

here is my essay question:

The gods’ role in human affairs is to punish those who have enjoyed prosperity for too long.

Pardon: "The Histories" of Herodotus have nothing to do with your question. Herodotus says at the beginning that he began writing because he thought that there was something about the whole history of the world that tended towards the struggle between the Greeks and the Persians. Gods had nothing to do with it. It was because only humans had anything to do with it that he wanted to tell the story.

Your search is rather to the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the plays of Euripides, Aristophanes, and the Greek tragedians.

You need to read the book--there are editions with commentaries available in many libraries.
