Okay I am nearsighted and I hate wearing glasses. I want to try contacts but someone I know scratched their cornea while trying to take them out. And I fear I might do the same, but I am not afraid to touch my eye to put them in. Should I stick to glasses or get contacts?

I am nearsighted and have astigmatism. They make special contacts for astigmatism, but they cost about twice as much and you can't get them off the shelf because they have to be custom ground. I have never scratched my cornea; it's all about technique. The most important thing is to be meticulous about how you keep them clean, and always wash hands before touching your eyes.

Pros:
Look nicer
Make the eyes appear larger and bluer
I can wear normal sunglasses
I can work out or play sports without fear of damaging them

Cons:
If I'm sick, sleepy or have allergies my eyes won't open wide enough to get them in
It hurts badly if there is any dust on them when you insert them
It takes a long time to put them in when you're just learning
They make me a lot more sensitive to light
If one falls out while you're out and about, your vision is awful
They can get a smudge on them sometimes while your wearing them
They can fatigue your eyes-your eye doctor may prescribe a schedule for wearing them for the first 2 weeks until you're used to them
If you fall asleep with them in, it hurts to take them out

Your optometrist can fit you for them and give you a trial pair. I would suggest going that route to see how you feel about them. You will also have to make sure that you always keep a pair of glasses that are a good prescription, because you can't always wear your contacts all day, every day.

Definately try contacts. I've had them since I was 14 and I love them. That person must have been scratching pretty frantically to scratch their cornea, lol.

Pros of contacts:

You can't feel them, unlike the glasses.

You can still see when you look up and down, unlike when you look outside of the lens of your glasses.

You may think that you look better with contacts.

After a while, the process of putting them in and taking them out takes about 10-20 seconds.

See your eye doctor to make sure you dont have an astigmatism.. if you do you could still get them upon your eye doctors appproval. It is up to you after that.. I know people that go from glasses to contacts and back just to suit the occasion. Go for it..

Contacts are easy to wear for most people, check with your eye doctor to make sure you can wear them without any problems.

contacts are easy....no scratches here for over 30 yrs....you can get an eye infection very easily though.....if you are a clean freak, it's not a problem, if you're sloppy, don't get them.
