Oh, boy, are the damage control "experts" out now, with all the hypothical maybes, and what-if's...

Here's a reality check...as long as a human being is involved in ANY endeavor, there will be screw-ups, mis-steps, and mistake PERIOD.

This woman was obviously thinking with the wrong head(if she were a man), and is no different than the other 6.5 billion people on earth; a walking contradiction.

No, because the whole point of exploring space is because it is the next step for our species' insatiable curiosity.

I think some of the questions being asked by the media are ridiculous. Like "Doesn't NASA know what its personnel are doing at all times?"
As far as I can understand, these are ordinary people with some very specialized skills. They are not NASA property--- nor should we necessarily expect them to be our moral and spiritual leaders. Not that it wouldn't be nice if everyone who is in the public eye could control themselves and set a nice example of behavior for the rest of us--- But realistically---not happening! I mean, look at Bill Clinton, JFK, Jimmy Haggard, etc etc etc.

I think it is a shame that this poor woman became so obviously delusional and no one noticed it before it got to this point. Since she was already stalking the other woman, why was it not reported and help offered to her? If NASA has any failing in this, that would be it.
But psychosis can happen to anyone--- "There, but for the grace of God, go I." A sad thing for all concerned.

So, to answer your question, if they don't hire human beings, what would be the alternative?

I agree she was not thinking at all. However to answer your question I really don't see how having robots would make NASA perfect. They also have malfunctions which could cause major problems and money. We already dump too much money into space programs so that would just mean even more. Do we really need to know information about other planets when we can barely handle the one we are living on now.

You know, we don't all think with the wrong head. And even thinking with the wrong head doesn't make most people homicidal.
