no matter where people are from, it seems that when most of them sing in english, there is no hint of the accent one hears when they are speaking english. why?

Accents mostly come from how people how tight or loose they hold their vocal chords. When people sing, they tighten their vocal chords so everyone's holding roughly the same tension there. How a person shapes words also creates accents, but when singing most people will automatically shape the words of a song as they've heard it sung before.

You can blame the 50's. British artists in the 50's and 60's were often encouraged to "throw" their accents because it was thought that the American record-buying public wouldn't buy albums if they sounded too un-American. McCarthyism was still alive and kicking during that time. Fast forward a little bit, and the new singers were trying to sound like the singers they'd idolized when they were younger, so the accents went out the door again. Of course, later Beatles albums were recorded with accents intact, so when bands like Oasis were ripping THEM off, they kept their twangs as they sang.

Most accents are caused by the formation of the mouth and tongue in correlation to the soft and hard pallets. So when holding their mouth the proper way to sing (to get the best sound), it's fairly accentless.

singers can either use their accent or train to hide it while singing... if your a singer then you ahve a great contrl over your vocal abilities and could learn to do this.
