The first radio transmitters and receivers were used mainly on ships, to communicate between ships and between ships and the shore. They weren't very entertaining because they transmitted Morse code instead of music. The first big commercial outfit was Marconi, which did not sell radios, but instead installed its transmitters and receivers on your ship and communicated with its stations on other ships and on shore. (This was how we knew where the Titanic was when it sank; otherwise nobody would have known anything about it.)
