If you're not going to have another opportunity...someone from another school or going to the year after...you should definitely go. Missing it will save you a little money but it is a defining social event and the culmination of High School.
Regardless of whether you are a geek, popular, overly athletic...it is worth going to have the experience.
In the grand scheme of things, high school is not worth much later in life. The whole high school sweetheart thing is over because people are smart enough to get married and have kids later and divorce is rampant.
I missed my prom when my date cancelled last minute on me and then I ended up going the year after with someone. It wasn't all that exciting but it was nice to experience it and not have any questions about what it was like.
If you're really worried about cost, go out and buy a cheap and simple black dress, find a date or a few single friends and have some fun for one night. Keep in mind that you will probably only keep in contact with about 10% of those people anyway so there's not much to loose.
The best part about going to prom would have to be watching all the people who took it too seriously. College is where people really have fun so keep that in mind.
Also keep in mind that grammar and spelling are two different things and any lessons in either are something one would take, not learn. ;-)

I went to my Junior prom but not my Senior one.
It is worth going once, if only for the experience.

You should go since this one of those special nights you want to remember for the rest of your life, unless of course you want to stay home watching home video's with your mom or grandmother?

Go to your prom. At age 38, I have never met anyone who regretted GOING to their prom, but I have met many who regretted NOT going to their prom!
I went to both of my proms--with actual GIRLS, believe it or not!

You should go.
Later in life you will hate yourself if you don't;
it's better to go and possibly waste money,
than it is to not go and waste precious memories.
