I do not know the book, but if it follows classical Greek myths, I can help.

Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, was in a field one day with her mother, who was the goddess of the harvest. While visiting Earth, the ground split open beneath Persephone. Hades, the god of the underworld, stood there and kidnapped Persephone and threw her in a chariot pulled by black horses. Persephone was forced to become Hades' queen. Eventually, after Demeter swore to never make the earth green again, Zeus forced Hades to let Persephone go. However, the gardener of the underworld noticed Persephone had eaten some fruit. This meant that every year for a couple of months, Persephone was forced to go down to the underworld again.
