Handgun age in Texas is 21.

To purchase a firearm, you can do it through private sale, as long as you aren't a convicted felon. At that point it is yours, but it would be wise to get something scribbled down from the previous owner saying you bought it from them, it is just a good idea. After that, no other steps are required.

Buying a firearm requires the firearms license holder to phone in something called an "Instacheck" to verify you don't have a record. You also have to fill out 2 sheets of paperwork. There is no waiting period or anything.

Legal age for long gun (rifle/shotgun) is 18.

EDIT: To the lady who replied that you are required to have a permit to own a handgun in Texas. INCORRECT! Texas law states that you can purchase a handgun and keep it for your home protection (In fact they just eased up on the home defense laws, the so called "duty to retreat" clause). You may be confusing this with the CHL. You only need a CHL if you plan to carry concealed, and it does involve a fee and small class. But to own one is completely legal without the need for a fee or permit.

I am from Texas, but have not owned a gun for 20 years, so my info is a little sketchy, but it's not incorrect (as some of the other answers are). As to age requirements, I'm not up on that.

There are 2 important differences in Texas: handguns and the others. You must have a permit for a handgun, which requires a fee and a short training class. In the class, you will learn gun handling AND state laws. Your county sheriff runs this.

As to rifles and shotguns, I know it's not as expensive or difficult. But the sheriff knows and will be glad to help you out (especially if he thinks you'll vote for him). Good Luck and Stay Safe...

its 21 everywhere. But you can shoot an automatic rifle when you are 18 by joining the military and going to Iraq. You also get a sidearm but you cant own one as a civilian go figure.
