When someone is dreaming, they're in REM (rapid-eye-movement) sleep. Dreams are important because (I think) dreams are the brain's way of organzing thoughts...you haven't had a good night's sleep unless you've dreamed.

Well, it is easy to know when someone is dreaming because their eyes move really fast under the eyelids, and its easy to see, and dreams are important because they help the brain keep and store what it needs, it also helps by sharing messages from the unconscious mind to the conscious part.
