like people in my school always talk about other people having fetishes but like why? why do people have them and what are some of them? i dont get what they say sometimes and then they make fun of me if i ask

A fetish is some object which is capable of giving you some kind of sexual pleasure, it could be some clothing, anything pertaining to that person; underwear, a shirt, the smell of a cologne.... anything!

The word "fetish" is often used incorrectly. A fetish is something that an individual requires to achieve sexual gratification. There's some weird ones out there but the most common are the feel of leather...hot candle wax dripped on their skin...physical torture or the opposite end of the spectrum with pleasure.
A "kink" (and I'm sure there's a more clinical term for it) is something that stirs arousal.
I guess an easy way to put it would be that someone might have a "kink" for leather thigh high boots, getting really aroused or turned on from them, but it isn't necessary for them to have boots on them or their partner to achieve orgasm...to need the boots to reach a climax would indicate a "fetish". A lot of people confuse the two constantly.
Personally, I don't have any fetishes, but I do have a little kink watching my husband doing his morning routine getting ready to go to work. From stretching when he gets out of the bed, through the shower/shave, to watching him put his socks and shoes on...until he puts on his necktie. Although I really enjoy watching him getting ready to leave in the morning, I don't NEED for him to do that to take it to the edge and over.
People in your school have no doubt coined the wrong term for what they really mean...don't hesitate to correct them either! HAHA!
True fetishes are rare but kinks are quite common.

Well fetishes are kind of like sexual obsessions and people have some pretty weird ones. (like feet)
