It really depends on every person. Music does help you focus on something you're working on, especially when the work is just purely mechanical (example: while doing household chores, constructing or repairing or assembling something, cooking, etc.). But doing paperworks, music doesn't help that much. It rather distracts your concentration or your thoughts into thinking of remedies or answers or having opinions. It will also cause you to take more time into finishing your work that requires deep thoughts; especially when the work is time-sensitive (example: school assignments due on the day or paperworks required by clients or bosses, etc...).

It help me concentrate a lot more. My best example is when I clean up the house. If I have music on, I can get the whole house cleaned, dishes washed, and laundry done. But, if the TV is on, I can't do it. I get too distracted and into my shows. No, not soaps. I will swear to this too! I have experienced this since I was 16, I am 33 now.

yes it's a proven fact women who are pregnant and listen to music like mozart the child will grow up smarter but it goes way beyond that music sooths the soul comes the spirit and revitalizes the body the've done many studies and its a known fact that people in big factories who are allowed to listen to music get 1/3 more work done then without so while certain kinds like heavy metal or rap or even to loud may be a little distracting under certain conditions overall Music will allow better concentration because it relives stress (hence) allowing better job performance.btw, great question.

If it does, then while driving, why do people turn down the radio, when they have to concentrate more?
I like listening to music, but I often tune it out when I am thinking.
It probably has to do something with harmony.
It is odd too, because I will start humming or thinking of a song that I wasn't paying attention to and then go back and find the song.

omg i have the same.. thing. i guess as you. haha i need my own music to be playing while i do something or else i cant really like function. and by my music i mean from my ipod, not other peoples.. its just a tic i have. its gotta be mine. haha but yeah i read, excersise, do homework, do chores, pretty much everything while listening to my ipod. usually instrumental or jazz helps me concentrate the most. Have you heard of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy? i love their songs. you should listen to some of them like I wanna be like you [thats a remake of the jungle book song] or mambo swing or jumpin jack. they're sweet. haha

No...I can't concentrate at all listening to any type of music. Whether concentration is better AFTER listening, I do not know...never noticed.

depends entirely on the person.
music i love inspires me.
music that i don't like and is loud only makes me angry.
classical music makes me sleepy.
i guess its whatever your mind associates it with.
so if you listen to music a lot when you concentrate i guess it can help you concentrate later in life.
