A jpeg is compressed, making it much smaller than a bitmap, and of lower quality (to what degree is variable). Bitmaps are not bad for your computer, but they take up much more space.

Unless you have a huge bitmap image that takes up all of your diskspace (which would never happen), it cannot harm you. Bitmaps are 100% uncompressed, so they have very large file sizes. Jpgs are compressed as much as you want (some image editors let you chose how compressed it is, like Photoshop and GIMP. Paint doesn't though.) For use on the internet, like for an avatar, you should use jpg or gif, because they are smaller and don't take forever to load, instead of a bmp.

JPG stands for Joint Picture experts Group and is a form of image compression, with varying quality depending on how much its compressed. The smaller it is the worse the pic looks.
Bitmap is not compressed and is usually a higher quality image, if somewher larger.
Neither is bad for your computer. I know that jpgs were said to be used in hidden messaging or viruses, but I have never experienced an occurrence of this.
