Karat is a measure of purity, usually (maybe exclusively) for gold. Platinum purity is usually stated in percentage points. For example, you might see PT 900, which means it's 90% platinum, and 10% something else such as iridium.

For comparison, karat is a linear scale for gold purity, with 24 being maximum. So, 14 karat gold is just 14/24=58.3% gold.
