WELL...
First off, I'm pretty sure now it costs about $40.00 for the original World of Warcraft, although they have recently released an expansion pack -- The Burning Crusade -- that just allows your characters maximum level to increase. To play online, subscription costs about $15 a month, for the year it's around $10 dollars a month I believe... However I'd recommend the month first just in case, so you know if you'd like to keep the subscription going.
-->What do I do?
*It's kind of like Grand Theft Auto, in a way. You run around and do quests for countless people, whether your human/undead/orc/gnome/dwarf/night elf/tauren/troll. You kill creatures or complete quests to gain experience, which will eventually give you a level up. (Max level for the original WoW is 60, expansion is 70) Completing quests/killing the creatures not only gives you experience, but you earn armor/weapons, stuff like that.
-->Will I be killed instantly?
*Absolutely not! First off, there's different realm types,
RP- Role Playing, play your character as if it was real life.
PvP- Player vs. Player, In contested territories, you are flagged for combat constantly. You could be gathering herbs or fishing, then instantly be attacked by a member of the opposing faction.
Normal- Mind your own business, flag for PvP when you want to.
RPPvP- Role Playing + PvP = RPPvP
For all of the realm types however, you can enter battlegrounds where you must reach a specific objective, wether it's capture the flag, gather the most resources, kill the opposing faction's leader, whatever, winning can lead to excellect armor/weapons/mounts.
-->Factions
There are two factions in WoW, Horde and Alliance.
Horde consists of: Orc/Tauren/Troll/Undead
Alliance consists of: Human/Dwarf/Gnome/Night Elf
Members of the same faction cannot kill eachother, but you can have a harmless duel to see who is the better player.
---->Hard to master?
It's definitely a learning experience. Watch other players and see how they deal with things, try new techniques, and I can almost gaurentee you'll have fun with it.
-->Classes
Mage: Caster that uses Fire/Frost/Arcane spells, great damage dealer.
Rogue: Melee sneaky assassin type character, great damage dealer.
Priest: Caster that is used as a healer type, can also be made into a damage dealer.
Warrior: Melee character that is used to keep the enemies off of them so the priest can focuse heals on him.
Warlock: Caster that uses many DoT's (Damage over Time spells) can summon demon minions. (Imp, Voidwalker, Succubus, Infernal, Felhound)
Hunter: Ranged damage dealer that can tame beast type creatures into becoming their companion.
Paladin (Alliance only in original WoW): Melee damage dealer that can also do a great job in healing.
Shaman(Horde only in original WoW): Melee damage dealer that can be great at supporting a group wether in enchancing damage to healing.
I would get into professions, but I'm sure your sick of reading :P

Ok, as everyone has answered above the game can be a little pricy. But, at least for me, it has been well worth it! I had never palyed before I bought it 8-9 monthes ago and I love it! I know that the $15 a month price tag might turn lots of people away, but many gamers buy a $50 game and get a few weeks play out of it. I spend less on video games now that I have WoW, instead of buying a new game every month to keep my interest.

Okay, game is now $20 and includes a free month. Monthly fees are about $15/month, so 15 x 11 months = $165 + $20 for the game = $185. If you add the expansion (which I would suggest) you're looking at $225.
There are a variety of things to do in the game. You have questing, killing critters, crafting, harvesting resources, exploring, player versus player (PVP). And if you are into it, roleplaying (personally, I love RP).
There are many types of quests you can do to level your character up, earn money, equipment and faction. Some involve killing x of this critter. Some include killing this certain elite critter. Some are delivery missions where they want you to take something to this person out here. Some involve collecting x of this certain item (which drops off critters, or is found throughout the world). There are other types of quests, but I'll leave you with that for now.
Killing critters will earn you experience and money/items. This is also known as "grinding experience" because you just kill things repetatively.
The crafting system is okay...nothing mind-blowing here. Depending on which professions you choose, you can make metal armor and weapons (blacksmith), leather armor (leatherworking), cloth armor and clothing (tailoring), gadgets like bombs, guns, and mechanical squirrels (engineering), potions (alchemy), enchant armor and weapons (enchanting), food and drink (cooking), bandages (first aid).
Harvesting resources, depending on which professions you have you can gather resources that people need to make items. You can collect ore and gems (miner), herbs (herbalism), leather (skinning), fish (fishing).
Exploring can be a great pasttime! My wife LOVES trying to uncover as much of her map as possible, even in areas where she may get killed because the critters are much higher than her. It's almost like a puzzle to her! =) Plus, you get experience from discovering new places.
It is an easy game to learn, so you should do just fine.

This is a very good game. I would sujest that you get a 6 month sub. to begin with. It is very easy to get into and the help system is very good. the people who play the game are very helpful and will alsomt alawys stop to give you a hand. if you choose a PvP server (player verus Player) then there will be some killing of players once you get to higher levels. it is accually very hard to die in that game until you get up to a higher level. the learning cuve is very good. check out the website for more and read some stuff on the game.

It pretty expensive. about twenty for the first disk and another 40 for the burning crusade expansion and about 15 dollars a month, you do the math. Everyone is pretty nice and there really isnt any spamming. obviously dont fall for the obvious tricks of giving out passwords etc. you can catch on pretty quick and get tips and tricks from forums or in game asking. its enter slash one to go into general chat to ask. that toook me a while lol.
