Im just watching mississipi burning, and it probably the most powerful film Ive ever seen, but just wondered if the klan are still around or have they disbanded?

I dont want to start a racist debate or anything like that, just wondered if there is anyone out there from the south that actually knows.

I cant imagine they are still around, but this awful film made me wonder if these terrible things still happen.

That's one of my favourite films. I watched Louis Theroux and he interviewed people who belonged to the KKK, that was about 5 years ago I think. They have a tv station and he followed them round for a while, it was shocking that people still have these views. They are still around but they can't get away with any of the stuff they used to. I watched a documentary about the real story behind that film and the man responsible for murdering black activists has only just been found guilty of it. They showed people from the modern KKK on there too. When I was in College I did an assignment about oppression and I found their web site too. They go on about Christianity mainly on their site now, putting in scriptures about how black people are evil, interpreting lines. Kind of justifying themselves, making out like they are still Christians even though they are full of hate. Some of the pictures I have seen of black lynchings are horrific, I'm glad those times have gone.

1) yes the Klan is still around and going strong. 2) the Klan has never burned anybody on a cross. they used to burn a cross on someone's lawn to indicate that they were angry at that person. 2) the Klan has grown in membership dramatically in the last few years as more and more people feel encroached upon by criminals belonging to minority groups.

They are still around, but nowhere near as powerful or numerous as they were up to the sixties. Organisations like the KKK will always be around, unfortunately. People have a boundless capacity for meaningless hatred!

Fortunately, lynchings are rare.

However, the KKK is still around. There are always people who will feed off fears of others.
