Two main things they're after - raiding bank accounts and identity theft.

If you haven't sent any financial details you're safe on the first one but with your name, address and passport info they can effectively become you - obtaining goods, credit, opening accounts, false identity etc etc.

Tell the passport office and Police immediately.

IF YOU'RE IN THE UK...
The Passport Office phone number is 0870 521-0410. You'll need to fill in and return form LS01 which you can do online from here... https://www.passport.gov.uk/lsr/(5dh1mjis5eamez45uvow5kao)/index.aspx

Wouldn't hurt to contact the state department just in case they try to make a fake passport with your name. At least you could get the official read on the situation instead of hearsay, although someone here may know more than some people in the Gov. I don't know what the post office knows, but that's an easy phone call. Both are on the Internet.
