JF Kennedy's inaguration speech interpretation of the conclusion... Help!?

On the closing speech of JF Kennedy he said "asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own. " Can anyone explain what exactly this mean? My understanding is Ask God's blessing and help because ?? God's work is .??? please explain

That we, as a people, step up and help each other whenever and wherever we can.
Not always easy, but life presents itself in such a way sometimes, that you will come forward for the good of a friend, community, city, state or the world.

I believe this leads us back to free will; meaning that some believe that God doesn't take an active role in the earthly events. Humankind will do as they believe and reap the benefits or suffer the consequences....J/S
