I have scrapped off the dried up white grout with care but the marks left by the dried up grout cannot be cleaned. What soloution or technique can I use to give the ceramic tiles it's original glazed shine again. I understand if this white grout was wiped off with a white cloth immediately while installing the ceramic tiles will not create this problem. But we have some careless, irresponsible contractor laborers who didn't bother to clean up after the mess. PLEASE HELP SOMEBODY!!

Hopefully you have not completely paid the contractor. You could contact him and tell them that you are not pleased with the condition that the floor was left. Especially if this is a new home construction, they have budgeted for cleaning. They usually have reliable janitorial services that they work with and the contractor pays to have cleaning performed. If the contractor refuses to help you and you are left to cleaning it on your own, you are pretty much stuck with scraping. Make sure you do not use metal to scrape, this can scar the tile. Grout is similar to concrete and there isn't much that can break it down, except for an acid based cleaner, which should only be used by a professional since it can deglaze the ceramic tile if not done properly. Your time has to be taken in cleaning each tile individually, so as not to damage the grout that is supposed to be there. Good luck

Removing grout residual is usually done with an acidic based cleaner, before using any harsh chemicals try vinegar diluted 5-1 with water, if that doesn't work then purchase some sulfamic acid crystals, and dilute with water according to the manufacturers instructions, you can find this product at most local hardware stores, if not then you can purchase a similar product called grout haze remover, online at

The one voted Best Answer is all about cleaning bricks. The question was about cleaning ceramic tiles - not the same thing at all! I do hate it when people rush in with answers without reading the question properly.

it is very difficult to remove it after it is set.

i know, this happened to me.

you might also try lemon juice and a toothbrush.

let the lemon juice sit on the grout for a few minutes.

I asked my son who installs it, and he said it's 50/50 white vinegar and water. (like a douche)
