They played 8 games because John won $50.00 which is 5 games at $10.00 a piece and Patti won three games, so 5 + 3 is 8.

I would say 8 games because John won $50 which means he won 5 games and Patti won 3 games which means she won $30.

Am I correct?

Well they had to at least play 8 games... but three of those games patti won - so she won $30- then she would have to lose 3 games to lose that money back to John. SO he won three games. so that is 6 games. But that make them even. So then they would have to play 5 more games that john would win.
totalling 11 games

Set it up in an equation.

3 x $10 = $30

$50 + $30 = $80. $10 for every played. $80/$10 = 8

They played 8 games.
