when I am knitting and purling on the same row is it better to switch my yarn to the other side before or after I slide the marker?

This is a good question.

I've always switched the yarn immediately after completing the previous stitch. That means the marker gets moved as a second step. In fact, anything else that has to take place happens after putting the yarn in place for the next stitch.

It may not matter in the long run which way it is done. What seems most important is to establish a consistent pattern of working so that you will know where you are if you must put your work down and pick it up at another time.
