Since Vista is on the market, now seems like a good time to start making a decision on a new PC.
My situation is; that I use my PC for some small business bookkeeping, but more for personal use. That being playing mp3s storing digital pics and surfing the web.
One thing to add is that I don't really get into games so high end graphics, etc. are not a concern.
One things I have been told is go for a P4 rather than a Celeron. Does it really matter?
Also deciding to spend some extra for a widescreen laptop, or stay with a desktop since portability is more of a want than a need for me.
I have built my own in the past, but I think this time it might be cost effective to buy brand name such as Dell.
Looking for good, knowlegable input. Thanks!

Avoid Vista! It is little more than imposed DRM on top of an XP with a slick Macintosh desktop, that requires 1 Gb RAM, 20Gb drivespace, and a bunch of money to acquire!

Get http://pclinuxos.com for the free download, and all the multimedia programs, to grab MP3's.

It includes GNUcash, and other programs, about 5500 of them!
Did I mention FREE!

Dell refurbs start at $69 from http://cheaptronicsdepot.com and all products have a 1 year warranty!

I get tehm and run Linux so they are upto 60X faster (benchmarks are vs XP Pro, tweaked up!)

I just started running Vista. It's a nice program with all sorts of new features. Also, they specifically offer a Business Edition that I'm sure will cover your bookkeeping needs. The nice thing is, all of the media features that you're looking for are present in both the Home Premium and Business Editions, it just comes down to personal preference. If you do get a Dell, look through all of their options. They actually do offer a few bookkeeping programs stock with some computers. Finally, definitely go for a P4. Celeron's simply don't have the capacity to run most high-demand programs. I'm not even talking about games. Outlook, Internet Explorer, and most bookkeeping programs are all high-CPU-demanding programs that you're going to want to run efficiently for both your media and business needs. Finally, if you're still deciding on models, seriously consider the XPS series computers. They are fast, efficient, and adaptable. Good luck!

Don't get Windows Vista. Hardly any programs and software are compatible with Windows Vista just yet. I was running Vista on my desktop and it crashed.

As far as processors, don't worry about P4 or celeron, they both work equally as well.

Laptops seem to slow down more than desktops and they aren't as reiliable as desktops so, that's your choice on that one.

If you are looking for price, then Dell is pretty good on prices. I have 2 Dells (one laptop, one desktop) and I'm very happy with them.

Just don't get a mini-tower if you ever plan on upgrading anything like installing an additional drive, etc...

I enjoy building computers as well but its just easier and more reliable to buy a factory built computer.

Good luck!
