...just listened to 10pm news, and the newsreaders sounded almost like war commentators - of course, the reason why it's 'front page news' is that London will be getting a fair sweep of it. North of, say, Birmingham and they wouldn't be so fearful...but would send someone up from the capital to gawp and sneer at the poor sods on the M6 in Cheshire.
Maybe when it reaches London, the tube stations are open 24 hours a day with the current switched off from 23.00 until 05.30. Who knows!

No offence taken, British...silly old me was out with friends, and in the first time in years, decided to join in with Wray & Nephews Rum - used to drink it with only ice 30 years ago...tried it two hours ago and was almost carried home!

Tikkitiboo...my father hailed from Aberdeen - and the only time it stopped being dark (no sun) white (mucho snow) and cold (mucho frio) was come the end of February. Aberdonians were used to it!

We go "crazy" when anything happens here, we don't know how to cope! If we have a "big" downfall of snow everything comes to a halt. If it's scorching hot our roads melt, train tracks break.......... and it's chaos. We have days of rain and everywhere floods....................
What suprises me is that we know the climate is changing, we know that the weather in the UK is unpredictable anyway but yet ever year it still "catches us out". You would think we would be prepared for all eventualities by now. And the funniest part is that we don't even get it that bad!!!

((Even funnier is that you ask a question and you can guarantee someone will answer by correcting you... or tell you to leave the country. Isn't it great to be British - "note sarcastic tone")).

I remember when I used to drive to work through 12ft high snowdrifts, so I quite like driving on snow......I've driven thousands of miles on it

However, snow is strange stuff.

What we get in the UK is relatively "warm" snow, with a lot of water content, which makes it extremely slippery. "Cold" snow, such as they get in Russia, Alaska and parts of Central Europe, has much more grip, beause it is firmer, harder and not wet.

Driving on very cold snow is a bit like driving on sand, and if it freezes really hard, it is like driving on a wet beach.....beautiful.

Add to this the very wide tryes fitted to modern cars, and the UK problem becomes worse. It's interesting to note how narrow are the knobbly winter tyres used by Scandinavian rally-drivers, which are probably not a lot wider than motorcycle tyres.

Then no-one has much experience of snow anymore......we had the last reasonable snow in the north about ten years ago.

There was a time when people kept a set of winter tyres in the garage, but not any more.

So I'm afraid it is likely to be a big problem with lots of small accidents to hold up the traffic.

I work in a super market and all the bread and milk was sold out. It's only snow for god sake and if I was gonna be snowed in I'd want something more interesting than bread to eat. All the alcohol and chocolate should be off the shelf! Imagine if we lived in Alaska or something, all the old biddies would be having kittens. I bet we get some sludge and it'll be gone by Friday.

I stand corrected! The snows up to the curb now! woo hoo! Snnow day, I'll be the first one making a snow man in my garden.
