Calcium. From food, not vitamin pills. The best absorbed Calcium is from dairy. But if you're allergic to dairy or don't like the calories, then a vitamin pill containing Calcium CITRATE may be a reasonable alternative. Calcium carbonate, i.e. Tums is just about useless in terms of absorption. The Government's referenced daily intake on elemental calcium ranges from 1000-1400 mg per day depending on your gender and age.

Make sure you get Magnesium with the Calcium. Magnesium makes the calcium hard so that it can function as bone. Also the pill should contain vitamin D and a trace mineral , boron, that seems to cement dietary calcium into the bone.

Finally, none of this will work if you don't get exercise. Bones become more robust when they are forced to carry a load. After all, that's what they were designed to do. In the case of bone, as with muscle, it's use it , or lose it.

Also, stay away from soft drinks. The phosphoric acid in many soft drinks dissolves bone. Not good.

Exercise and calcium.

Bones are made up of calcium, and your muscles use calcium to function, so if you don't get enough in your diet your muscles will take from your bones.

Exercise strengthens the muscles that support the bones they are attached to, making them stronger (working together).
