I need all work including what you used as variables(such as x=1st number).The area of a right triangle is 96m squared. The length of one leg is 8m less than twice the length of the other. Find the length of each leg.

Lets call the length of the first leg x.

The second leg is 8 m less than twice the length of the first leg. This means that we can find the length of the second leg by first multiplying the length of the first leg by 2 and then subtracting 8.
So the length of the second leg (which I will call y) is given by

y=2x-8

Now, since we are given the area of the triangle (96 m^2), we can use that formula to find the length of the sides.

A = b*h/2

It really doesn't matter which side we call the base or the height since it is a right triangle. Plugging in all we know yields

96 = x*y/2

Now substitute what we came up with for y.

96 = x*(2x-8)

I wont solve this for you, but I will tell you that this is a quadratic equation and therefore has two answers. One of the answers will probably not make real world sense (a negative distance ???).

Hoped this helped.

What you need for this is:

Area of triangle = (1/2) * first leg * second leg

Let y = length of second leg (the one referred to as the other)

What's twice the length of the second leg?

What's the length of the first leg?

What's the area as a function of x?

Let this equal the area you've been given.

Solve.

You didn't think I'd actually do it for you, did you?

Leg one = 2L-8
Leg two= L
soo
(2L-8+L)/2 = 96.
