Nice question and also tough.
Here my opinion :
If we talk about rock music than i must say that British have it. I mean from the old times until now the British always have some amazing bands to listen to, I am not saying that american do not have any good bands. And for this we have to shoot back to years behind us. In the old times, british have so many cool bands in their country, but in this country the bands never been so famous, they just play some gigs in some places but never get what they want in theie music career. So then some producers in british which have contact with some ppl in america, arrange something that really exploding the world of music. For example The Beatles or rolling stones, they are never so very big name in their local music scene, but after they are hailing to USA, then the world know them so well.
So the British bands is really have good music, And America have some tools to make that good music explode and spread like disease to the world.

Well the two best bands in history originated in the UK - The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. You've also got to mention others like Clapton and Townshend/The Who being from there too. At the same time, the U.S has some claim to fame too. Jimi Hendrix, a Seattle, WA native went to the UK and became famous there. The other two members of The Jimi Hendrix Experience were from the UK, but Jimi is the one that is considered the single best guitarist in history (Clapton and Jimmy Page of the UK come close behind). Also, Clapton's most memorable songs come his Derek and the Dominoes band, which was composed of mostly Americans excluding himself. The most credit has to go to the British though. The Beatles landing in the U.S to do their first tour began the "British Invasion" which changed the way music was created in the U.S. Not to take away from American bands, but the influence of those British bands (Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath) practically created them.

This is a question that will never have one definte answer. Recently American's have had more success but in the past Great Britain was the powerhouse. It also depends on which band is the greatest. A lot of people say the Beatles but that can be debated. In about 20 or so years we will be able to look back and compare the era's of music. Until then this question is based solely on personal opinion.

Also to whoever said Jimi Hendrix was British, Jimi Hendrix was from Seattle.

THE BEATLES!!! They came in America with the British Invasion!!! They are the BEST band ever! No one will EVER be able to be as GREAT and AWESOME as them! I love the Beatles, all four of them! Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr! The best rock stars definitly rocked the streets of the UK first. Those best rock stars came from Liverpool, England; THE BEATLES! America has some good rockers too.

Jimi Hendrix Experience was composed of Jimi(American), Noel Redding(British) and Mitch Mitchell(British) but they were surpassed by the next evolution for Hendrix, Band of Gypsys.

Some of my personal favorite bands are from the U.S. (Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead), but I think the Brits win out overall. LOADS of great British bands to pick from, many of which have already been mentioned, inmcluding my favorite...the Who!

The Who, British, are the greatest rock band ever, hands down. Don't be fooled again.
