Taxi is a con job waiting to happen. Library of congress will mail you copywright forms for free, you pay 20.00 dollars when you send them in. PA for performing arts (songs an music), SR for sound recordings( you only need this after you have 10-12 songs mastered on a cd. ) As far as published, well thats a big can of worms to get into on here. If you get published, you or someone has the connections to get the songs auditioned by tv and movie producers, record labels, ect. You can prob find what your lookin for on the net. This is an area where I could type for a couple hours at least. Never pay anyone to do anything, a publisher will give YOU an advance, and when it makes money, the publisher gets a cut of the royalties ( think of it as commission), an if it doesn't make money, you have to pay that back to the publisher, but nothing is set in concrete, depends on the deal.

Just so you know, publishers generally wont pay attention to you if your writing rock, rap, blues, or jazz, if your writing country, you got a shot. Country artists will use songs from any source as long as there good, as far as rap an rock, the aren't intereasted because they are looking for performers/artists, and in these genre's they write there own stuff. Also, Look up BMI and ASCAP on the internet. these sites will be helpful too.
