look for a product called IRON OUT.

it worked on my 80 year old toilet.

it is whiter than white.

Menards, Home Depot or Lowes should have it.

let it sit in the tank and bowl over night. then flush the problem away.

Bar Keepers Friend brand of cleanser. Slightly acidic compared to others with sufficient abrasive qualities, but won't hurt the glazing. We have high iron content it it cleans it every time.

If you have iron, bleach will just make the water turn brown. Ajax has abrasive qualities, but the one mentioned above requires less elbow grease on your part. You won't need much and it should have minimal impact to your septic function.

I remembered having the same problem some years ago in one of the homes I lived in.

I decided to go to Home Depot to look for it. I did find a liquid cleaner in plastic gallon bottle from the stain remover section.

Perhaps you could visit either Home Depot or Lowe's stain remover section and browse. There's a great variety of stain remover for all sorts of uses. Also you could get some advice from the knowledgeable staff working in that particular section.

I lived in a house that had well water once. When the water inspector came around, I asked him what the rust-colored stuff in my toilet was and he told me that it was Manganese and gave me some stuff in a non-descript plastic large pill bottle sized container that made the mineral stains go away with one flush.

I cannot remember what it is that the guy gave me, but you could try calling your water management authority and ask them what works for the minerals that you have in your water. Different regions have different mineral problems, so something that worked for me might now work for you!

We are on well water and we have a water softener and filter. We use the Morton Iron Out Salt in the softener, but still get the iron stains. The only thing that works for us is the pumice stone and elbow grease.

Sound like you need some good quality iron filters. Or get your well drilled deeper to get away from the iron.
