Rochester is nice. Lovely cathedral and the high street looks like something out of a Dickens novel. Strood is ok, but not so much character. both have good links to London - everywhere has it's ups and downs. Do you know anyone who lives in Medway? Having friends nearby helps to feel comfortable in a place. I live in Gravesend which is not that far and I love it. Why not research into some of the History of Medway. It is steeped in it, which I find fascinating. Dont be put off by people who put areas down. Go visit, get a sense of the place (at various times of the day/evening. Check out the website www.upmystreet.com. that will give you lots of info re: schools, healthcare, entertainment, housing and more. I know people who live in Medway including Chatham and Gillingham and they love it. Property is very reasonably priced there, and there are some gems to be found if you look hard enough. Good luck.

There are some rough places in medway (as with any town or city) . Walderslade is better than some areas. Check out the local newspapers to get a feel for the area.

Kent ?!
Steer clear of Chatham & Gillingham.
____

Chatham's town centre is horrific. Highest crime rate in Kent. Gillingham is similar. Walderslade is nice, and so is Eccles. Walderslade is your best bet.
