Dell can run GNU/Linux. As can HP, eMachines, Sun Sparc, and others. But, for schools, 39 states have already set on running GNU/Linux within the next year, the latest being Indiana, with the purchase of 120,000 Dell computers. Dell managed to contract for the lowest price.
These are State level purchases, and each of the county or district school boards in all those states usually get to make their own deals for computer equipment. But, the path is made, the deal is there for them to take advantage. Just a matter of time.
You can run http://pclinuxos.com with it's 5500 free games and programs. It is a LiveCDrom. It runs on any x86 machine and I have tried it on over 400 in the past two years. It runs this Dell Dimension 4100, 'found on curbside donation'. 933Mhz, with 512Mb RAM.
This thing runs upto 50X faster than it did on Microsoft ME.
Also installed a Pioneer DVR-109 (used, from an Apple!), and it burns everything I desire.

Dell makes most of its money from corporate accounts. HP is ahead in market share as of last year. Read the finance and business news - Michael Dell just resumed his job as CEO after firing Kevin Rollins. Dell stock is way down.

it isn't that dell is to good, and in many cases all of the brands you named are better. I personally think that it is because of competitive marketing and commercialism, they drive their prices so low and advertise them so much that everyone wants them because there cheaper, and they can do at least something. my advice is to get something else, HP, Emachine, or or Gateway all would be good choices. but it's mainly because they put way to much into commercials that say t's better and less expensive.

I think just because they are cheaper, but i personally think they are crap. I didn't even have my dell for 6 months and it crashed, while it was just sitting there no less. It's not like im technology retarded i actually have teachers coming to me on how to fix problems, but that was just unbelievealbe
