If you're talking tropical fish it sounds like an angel fish, flat, silver with black stripes.

Could be a number of things. Are the stripes horizontal or vertical? I'm giving you a few links with fish photos. I'd take a guess at the following for freshwater:
vertical stripes: marble angelfish, convict cichlid, black skirt tetra, discus, marble hatchetfish
horizontal stripes: black neon tetra, emporer tetra, zebra danio
another "flat" fish, but not usually striped is the silver dollar

Has to be an Angel fish but if it is a sea water fish I have no idea.
Check your local fish shop.

You could be thinking about a Discus or a Angelfish, if they're fresh water fish...Or some type of cichlid. Do you know if it's a fresh or salt watr fish, it'll be easier to identify once we know the type of water it lives in
