If your uncle is in a care home, why are you worried about how much he can give you as a gift? I suggest getting your head screwed on straight and trying to figure out how much you can give him as a gift, not just financially but emotionally as well!!!

Instead of groaning about your question, I believe that you have given us the wrong end of the stick. Perhaps your Uncle gives you money every year and you feel this is too much and want to say to him 'No more, please'.
The easiest thing to do is say to him that he gives you far too much moolah and you think would be happier if he kept it to himself, therefore your present being his happiness or you could donate a part of the money to charity.
However, if this your question was exactly how you stated it then shame on you. He is going into or is in a care home for a reason. You should care for him and make his life as comfortable as possible.

It would be nice to know what angle you are coming from here before answering your question.
I don't want to respond wrongly to this question so instead I reckon the best thing is to advise you to make your question clear as some people may giving you stick because they are interpreting your question wrong.
Sorry I know I probably ain't ben much help but just some gentle advise to prevent people getting the wrong idea in the future.

On the chance that you're asking this as some kind of tax shelter or estate question, you should seek out a professional.
If you're an opportunist, seek out a therapist, and stay away from your uncle.

Tax wise its three grand a year in UK - otherwise the tax has to be paid if he doesn't live seven years. If you are not bothered about tax then there is no legal limit

It could possibly be $10,000 like from a parent but you really need to ask a tax accountant. He/she should be able to answer that with out charging you a dime.
