And how exactly do you propose to distinguish which ones are snobby and which ones aren't? Besides, a school's an inanimate object. It's the people in that school which make it "snobby." So, even if you close down the school, those people have to go somewhere. They'd just make the next school they go to "snobby."

The other question is, what exactly is wrong with a school being snobby? How does that really affect you?

Why can't we outlaw snobbish state schools (and they do exist!)?

A public school is a boarding school. Like it or not, there is a need for such schools when parents are working abroad, moving around a lot or working very long hours. They, unlike some other schools, tend to have a good academic record. Based on that, there is no justification for closing them.

As for snobbish? Well, there is probably as much conflict between public schools and neighbouring state schools as there is between two nearby state or private schools. They might wear a smart, old fashioned style uniform but that really means very little. A few schools have antiquated traditions but in many ways these are what makes the schools individual and have helped them survive as long as they have.

Because some people like snobbish public schools and the ones that have the power to outlaw them probably send their kids there.

Whilst people may not agree with what is by all accounts an elitist system for the privileged, the government will not close schools which are successful and passing their OfSTED inspections. These schools often provide a curriculum which is well above the national average, as a result of this the schools have to provide a number of free scholarship places for the less privileged amongst us.

Who says they're "snobbish"?

Why should we want to?

(I didn't go to a public school, but I don't understand why anyone should (a) make such judgements about them, or (b) have any reason to want to abolish them.)

Because they are in the UK, to remove the snobbiness, you'd have to put them in another country.
