the most commona/effective way is to secure it by enabling wep.

you login to the configuration page of the router by visiting (probably) http://192.168.0.1 with probably the username 'admin' and the password 'admin'. then you enable wep in the wireless settings, provide a wep 'key' (password) and save the changes.

when you connect with your laptop, you'll be asked for a key - enter it and you'll be connected to the router as normal.

that's about as specific as it gets since the configuration pages of different routers vary, functions are called different things, and they are in different places.

the manual which came with your router will have a large section of detailed instructions for setting up wep on your router.

You don't mention which router brand you have, but Speedbooster is a Linksys technology, so you have a Linksys (blue and black box)

This method will make sure (barring very savvy hackers) only your wireless card's unique address will be granted access to your router.

Start-run-cmd-"ipconfig/all" write down the number called "physical address"

click http://192.168.1.1

username [empty]
password "admin"

wireless --> wireless network access --> select "restrict access"

type your "physical address number" in this spot.

save settings

login to your router through your web browser and look for the tab "security". follow the steps to enable WEP. next time you try to connect, you'll have to enter the password so your laptop can access.

You have to pay like $50 extra so that it can be made for private use.
